A former grocery store in the western portion of the county will soon be used for storage.

The Post-Journal and OBSERVER have been analyzing real estate sales in Chautauqua County and recently looked at the transactions from Jan. 14-23. The county does not provide this information but it is available by reviewing real estate documents at the clerk’s office.

During this time period, 104 Church St., Sherman was sold to Micah Meredith for $165,000. This is the location of the former Graham’s Market, which closed in 2022.

Mayor Colleen Meeder was interviewed by Westfield Republican reporter David Prenatt who told him the old grocery store was purchased for storage. Meredith is finishing up the conversion to indoor temperature controlled storage. Meredith is also planning to put in a storage unit near I-86.

The building has been an integral part of Sherman for many years. Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency previously noted the building was originally established in 1969 as a Quality Market and was later taken over by Jeff and Jody Mack in 2004 when it became Mack’s Hometown Market. It closed in 2018 for personal reasons.

After this, Mark Graham set about acquiring the closed grocery store. The county IDA, in collaboration with Five Star Bank and Southern Tier West, provided a financing package and after three years, he was able to reopen the store as Graham’s Market.

Unfortunately, the market reopened shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 when the state mandated many businesses to close. As a new business, the former owner was not eligible for much of the economic stimulus programs available to other businesses and eventually went bankrupt.

From Jan. 14-23, there were eight sales that were $300,000 or higher. They are as follows:

    – 29 Whitfield Ave., Chautauqua Institution sold for $875,000.

    – 4107 Lake View Drive, Ellery sold for $710,000.

    – 3527 Lake St., Ellicott sold for $490,000.
