Federal Trade Commission warns of scammers targeting people struggling with mortgage

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Scammers are targeting those who have trouble paying mortgages.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, there are some red flags to look out for if you receive a message from someone offering you relief.

First, scammers will give you an option to avoid foreclosure by asking for money up front.

The FTC recommends never paying first, because it’s illegal for companies to charge a fee before you get services.

Second, scammers tell victims to stop communicating with their lender. You always have the right to talk with them about other options.

Lastly, scammers will try to convince victims to transfer the deed to their home to them. Just know if you do, you probably won’t get it back, according to the FTC.

The FTC has multiple resources for managing debt, starting with a budget worksheet to help identify where you can spend less and where to save.

The commission also encourages people to call companies where they owe money and explain their situation. It’s possible that companies can coordinate a payment plan.

Housing counselors are available to help pay off debt.

The FTC said to report any mortgage relief scams you spot at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your state attorney general.
